Both Playing Rules and Special Operating Rules were debated and several of the newly approved changes will effect the Slo-Pitch Community. See the changes below.

At their AGM, Softball Canada announced that they have reached agreement in principle with the American Softball Association to participate in the 3rd Annual Border Battle. This event, between US and Canadian All-star teams, should be very exciting. The series is currently tied at one victory each.Complete details of this event will be available on the Softball Canada website www.softball.ca soon.

2010 AGM Special Operating Rules Changes

2.1d Tie Breaking: If teams are tied for “2 lives” position, they will be ranked by the tie breaker criteria. In the past games were played to break the tie. Tie breaker games will still be played if teams are tied to the last playoff spot.

2.2.7c)ii) Any bat in the playing area, including the dugout/bench area and any warmup area are subject to inspection and approval.
1.31 The force out is determined by the situation at the time the appeal is made; not the time of the infraction

3.1a Clarified that to be legal, bats must be on the ASA approved bat list

3.1b ASA approved interlockable two piece locking bats are legal.

Rule Change Impacts Masters “Add Player ranking will be determined by the highest level played in the current and preceding year“

The 2010 SPO AGM was held Saturday, Oct 16 at the Best Western Lamplighter Hotel in London. The morning began with various workshops including a very informative presentation by representatives of our insurance company. They presented some very interesting facts on the coverage of our policy. We will be posting this information on our website in the near future. Following the workshops, the SPO Delegates met for the General Meeting part of the day. First came the many reports, including the financial statements. which is necessary for a not-for-profit organization. Next came the discussion and voting on proposed rule and Bylaw changes. The changes voted in for 2010 can be viewed here 2010 AGM In the elections, Don Buchanan (Barrie) and Wayne Griffiths (Port Hope) were acclaimed as Directors for the next two years. Bob Weedon (Chatham) was acclaimed as Secretary/Treasurer.

Following the business portion of the day, the Awards Luncheon was held. At this event three special Awards were presented:
SPO Director of the Year – Sam Fenech & Tami Hore (Zone 5 – Brampton)
SPO Tournament Director of the Year – Ryan Rochon (Zone 4 – Welland)
SPO Tournament of the Year – Niagara Summer Tournament – Tournament Director Jon Horbach (Zone 4 – Niagara on the Lake)
Congratulations to these four people for these well-deserved honours.

2010 Annual General Meeting
Bylaw & Rule Changes

The following changes were approved by the membership for play in 2011.

1. Bylaw 19.6iii : Add “Player ranking will be determined by the highest level played in the current and preceding year.

The current rule limits the number on high level players on Masters 35/40 teams This clarifies how the level is determined.

Rationale: Clarifies what constitutes the level of a high level player.

2. Playing Field: Pitching distance is 50 – 60 feet.

Increases the size of the pitching box from 5 feet to 10 feet.

Rationale: Allows the pitcher more distance if desired.

3. Mercy Rule: Currently reads – All E divisions and Masters 50+, 55+, 60+ & 65+. A maximum of 5 runs per inning may be scored. (Exception: 7th inning)
Add ” A team 17 or more runs ahead after 3 1/2 if the home team or 4 innings if the visiting team shall be declared the winner.”

When a team is 17 or more runs behind in the 4th inning, the team behind will always be at least 12 runs behind in the 5th inning so there is no need to play the 5th inning..

Rationale: Clarifies the situation when using the 5 run per inning rule.

The masters or Seniors slo-pitch players got in on the act too. Led by Global Fireballs from Calgary, AB, Canada taking home the Gold from the Mens 55+ – D Division 13 Teams from across Canada placed in the Top 3 in their Division at The HUNTSMAN WORLD SENIOR GAMES, held this past Oct. 3-15, 2010 and hosted in St. George, Utah.

The HUNTSMAN WORLD SENIOR GAMES, as it is known today, began in 1987 as the World Senior Games, an international senior sports competition. Founded by Daisy and John H. Morgan, Jr., the Games began with their vision of an international sports event for men and women ages 55 and better. Both agreed that the golden years were better when good health and physical fitness became a way of life, not an occasional hobby.

In 1989 Jon M. Huntsman, Chairman of the Huntsman Corporation, became the Games’ principal sponsor after recognizing that the Games not only fostered lifetime fitness, but also expanded Utah’s economic vitality. A proud supporter of the Games, the Huntsman family continues to open the Games personally, with a warm welcome to the athletes and the lighting of the torch in traditional Olympic fashion during the Opening Ceremonies.

Since its inception, the Games have been open to all men and women meeting the age requirement. The second year of the Games the age requirement was reduced from age 55 to age 50 to include more athletes and to encourage those looking at retirement to become involved in a personal fitness program or team sport. The overall, general dates of next year’s Huntsman World Senior Games will be October 3-15, 2011.

Amateur Softball Association 2011 Locations and Dates Announced For Slow Pitch National Championships

The Amateur Softball Association has announced the 2011 locations and dates for the National Championships for all classes for Men, Women and Coed. The Amateur Softball Association changed its tournament structure for Men’s Class A, B, C and D Slow Pitch and Women’s Class B, C and D Slow Pitch in 2001.The new structure split the country into East and West National Championships with the winners of each advancing to Oklahoma City to decide the true National Champion in each division of play.

In 2002, Hooters of America became the official sponsor of the men’s division of the event and obtained naming rights to the men’s series and began assisting in promoting the event through a combination of nation wide in-store promotions and advertising campaigns.

In the past the Women’s series had been known as the USA Softball National Championship Series but in 2003 the entire Championship Series was placed is under the HCS banner. In 2003, the Women’s B classification became Women’s Open and allowed teams from the upper divisions of play to compete for a shot at Oklahoma City.

Since then a number of changes have occurred in relation to the format of the Hooters Championship Series. In 2006 the divisions of play for the Men’s East/West National Championship changed when the Men’s Class A division was removed from the East/West concept and placed as a stand alone event that was hosted in Oklahoma City in conjunction with the Hooters Championship Series. In 2007 the Women’s Open division was changed to match the format of the Men’s Class A National Championship with the East/West concept being dropped and a single national championship being established in Oklahoma City during the Hooters Championship Series.

The 2008 season brought about more change when the ASA council’s actions impacted the Men’s Class C championship match-up after they decided to replicate what was instituted for the 2007 season. The ASA council voted to split the country into 4 territories running four separate National Championships, flying all four teams into Oklahoma City for a double-elimination showdown to determine the nation’s top C team. In addition, the ASA 2K Series was launched for the Class A teams culminating with the top A teams descending on Oklahoma City for the National Championship.

A series of qualifying tournaments in the Men’s Class B, C and D and Women’s Class C and D classifications will be held April thru August in conjunction with the 83 state & metro ASA associations across the country. Over 300 local ASA sanctioned qualifying tournaments will determine which teams receive berths for the ASA East & West National Championship Finals and the Men’s Class D National Championship. The eight East & West National Championship Finals tournaments will held in various locations across the country, and will bring together thousands of men’s and women’s slow pitch players. The winning teams from the East & West National Championship Finals in each classification will earn a berth into the Hooters Championships Series Finals, which takes place in Oklahoma City on September 26-28 at the nation’s best softball facility – ASA Hall of Fame Stadium Complex. The two overall division winning teams from the East and West will play in a best three out of five, winner take all series.

Winners of the East/West National Championship Finals and the Men’s Class D winners will be awarded 15 round-trip airline tickets and eight hotel rooms in Oklahoma City.

Once the competition is completed in Oklahoma City, competing teams will walk away with memories that will last a lifetime and each can boast they played in the best softball facility in the country against the best teams in the country. The eventual winner’s of the Hooters Championships Series will secure the bragging rights for the next 12 months as the “Best of the Best” in their division of play and the only true national champion.
