Slow pitch takes spotlight in OKC

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – In three days, the 2009 Hooters Championship Series (HCS) will kick off with 14 teams competing at the ASA Hall of Fame Complex in Oklahoma City, Oct. 2-4. The National Championships in adult slow pitch in five divisions will be decided as each team advanced from their respective region in qualifying tournaments. The ASA Men’s Class A Slow Pitch and Women’s Open Slow Pitch will also be held in conjunction with the HCS giving softball fans a great variety of levels to watch.

Both the Men’s C and D division will compete in pool play before bracket play begins on Saturday morning while the Women’s C and D will compete in a best of five series. The Men’s B Division will also compete in a best of five series. The Men’s Class A division will consist of an 11-team bracket while the Women’s Open will showcase a seven-team bracket.

Play begins Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. with the D Division of both Men and Women. The Men’s Division fields four teams including North Champions Next Generation Softball/Just1More (Owatonna, Minn.), East Champions Virginia Select (Crozet, Va.), West Champions Victory Custom Athletics (Saugus, Calif.) and South Champions LA Strokers (Duson, La.). The Women’s D Field includes East Champions BW3/K&G (Champion, Ohio) and West Champions PDX Softball (Newberg, Ore.).

The C Division begins Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. The Men’s C features North Champions Double Deez (Preston, Iowa), West Champions West Coast Dynasty/Pytch Blakk (Colton, Calif.), East Champions Softball Times (Lexington, Ken.) and South Champions CSC/Gutterworks (Cookeville, Tenn.). East Champions Low Bob’s (Frankfort, Ky.) and West Champions Springfield Crush (Springfield, Mo.) will battle it out to take bragging rights in the Women’s C Division.

The Men’s B Division will see a best of five battle between East Champions Checking/Worth (New Haven, CT) and West Champions Tharaldson Enterprises (Fargo, N.D.).

Team USA Coach Steve Shortland (Overland Park, Kan.) and many of the Men’s Slow Pitch National Team players who led the United States to victory over Canada in July’s inaugural Border Battle return to Oklahoma City this weekend to compete for the Men’s Class A title. Among them are Dexter Avery (Sierra Vista, Ariz.); Rusty Bumgardner (Gastonia, N.C.); Brett Helmer (Cicero, N.Y.); Dennis Rulli (Los Angeles); Brian Wegman (Cincinatti, Ohio); and Losson White (Omaha, Neb.).

Action in the Men’s Class A event begins Friday at 5:30 p.m.; Saturday at 10 a.m.; and Sunday at 8 a.m. The teams competing are All Star Plumbing (Lawton, Okla.); CSI/JSA (Oklahoma City, Okla.); Fence Brokers Inc./GameTimeSupply.com/Worth (Bryant, Ark.); Long Haul Trucking (Lakeland, Minn.); Payne’s Woodlaw (Hugo, Okla.); RentKing/Ambush (Norman, Okla.); SW Oklahoma Outlaws (Altus, Okla.); TCP Easton (Burlington, Iowa); Team Combat (Kent, Wash.); United States Armed Forces; and Chaney’s/WCS/Easton (Escondido, Calif.).

The Women’s Open kicks off Friday at 2:30 p.m. with the first of the three-game championship set for Saturday at 7 p.m. Teams contending for the National Championship in the Women’s Open division are Anarchy (Moore, Okla.); Enough Said (Tallahassee, Fla.); Ft. Hood Ballers (Killeen, Texas); Iowa Aces (Urbandale, Iowa); Quiet Storm (Killen, Texas); Sabotage (Oklahoma City, Okla.); and United States Armed Forces.
