Historic three-peat

1st Athlete To Win 3 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week Awards

Washington’s Danielle Lawrie (Langley, B.C.)

Washington’s Danielle Lawrie (Langley, B.C.) became the first athlete in history to win three USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week awards in a season today when the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America awarded her the Player of the Week honor for May 3-9. She won the first Player of the Week honor of the season for the week of Feb. 8-14 and also claimed the honor during week nine, April 5-11.

Lawrie went 3-0 over the weekend against Stanford to give UW its first conference title since 2000, firing two shutouts including her fourth no-hitter of the season. She allowed just one run and six hits in 20 innings pitched, with the lone run of the weekend coming on a solo home run off the bat of USA Women’s National Team player Ashley Hansen.

Lawrie struck out at least 11 in each game and walked just three combined all weekend as she moved just 11 strikeouts shy of Alicia Hollowell’s Pac-10 career record. She also had a big weekend at the plate, going 4-for-9 with four RBI, including a dramatic two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh Saturday to give UW a 2-1 win.

On Friday, Lawrie did not allow a hit in five innings of work, striking out 11 and walking just one in an 8-0 win. She also went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the game. On Saturday, she allowed just one run on five hits and struck out 13 with no walks but her biggest contribution was her first career walk-off home run, her 12 of the year that snapped a 21-game homerless drought. Then on Sunday, she allowed just one hit in eight innings and struck out 10 for her nation-leading 19th shutout of the year. She allowed a single in the first then did not allow a hit over the final seven innings.

“It’s a great honor for Danielle to be named USA Softball Player of the Week. What Danielle accomplished for us this weekend against a tough Stanford line-up was awesome, especially knowing that the Pac-10 title was within our reach,” said Washington Head Coach Heather Tarr. “Our program hasn’t won a conference title in 10 years, so what Danielle and our team has done so far this year is pretty special.”

The final Player of the Week honor for the 2010 season will be announced next week.
